All UK visa applications in Bangladesh to be made online

From Sunday 19 May 2013, all applications under the points-based system will need to be made online. All other applications will be online-only from Sunday 2 June 2013.

From these dates, manually completed application forms will no longer be accepted.

Diaspora-driven development: how to turn wealth to health in Bangladesh

Sylhet division in north-east Bangladesh, where around 95% of all British-Bengalis trace their origin to, should in theory be the wealthiest and healthiest part of country. The region receives around US $1bn in remittances every year from expatriate Bengalis in the UK alone.

However, wealth hasn’t translated to health in Sylhet. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, Sylhet has worse literacy and school enrolment rates than all other regions, child malnutrition rates are well over the WHO emergency threshold of 15%, fertility rates are the highest in the country and expectant mothers are more likely to die during child birth in Sylhet than any other part of Bangladesh.

Progress towards digitalisation in Bangladesh

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Sunday that the country made a good progress in its efforts towards building ‘Digital Bangladesh’ in the last three years as pledged in the ruling party’s election manifesto.

“We’ve achieved many successes to this end,” she said while inaugurating the multimedia classrooms and digital academic contents developed by teachers.

A Tablet of Knowledge

Hajira, a student of class five of Moishal Para of Nizmawna village in Gazipur, is both excited and nervous when she is handed the ‘Amadeyr Tablet‘, a touch-screen electronic device. It is smaller in size than a netbook and comes with a bright blue plastic cover. She presses the ‘power’ button and the screen lights up. A homepage with pictures of Hajira’s family shows up…
