Plan for Tongi-Bhairab Bazar double line railway track

Bangladesh Railway yesterday signed a deal with a Chinese firm on upgrading the Tongi-Bhairab Bazar single-line track to double lines, almost five years after a project was initiated in this regard.

The Tk 1,405 crore project also includes improving the signalling system on Dhaka-Chittagong main line, which is expected to be completed by 2014.

Abu Taher, director general of Bangladesh Railway, and Wendong, deputy general manager of the contractor firm China Railway Group, signed the deal at the Railway Bhaban in the capital.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) is financing Tk 1,330 crore, equivalent to 94.70 percent of the project cost, while the rest will be borne by the government.

Experts question census projections

Bangladesh is now more crowded than ever before as the preliminary results of the 5th Population and Housing Census 2011 showed 17.964 million people adding in the last decade in the densely-populated country.

With 14.4 percent increase in the size of population, 964 people live in every square kilometer.

The results on Saturday showed the country’s total population at 142.319 million on March 15, comprising an almost equal number of males and females – 71.255million and 71.064 million.

No Sylhet Development Authority yet

The process to establish the Sylhet Development Authority has so far achieved a little progress after the cabinet reached the decision to form it in 2006.

The delay has disrupted the overall development of the city, observed many of its dwellers.

The absence of SDA delayed the finalisation of the master plan, said the Sylhet City Corporation officials.
